Does Heaven Have A Map?

“Heaven is much closer than we think. Just look into your heart.”

Does Heaven exist? And who cares? It seems that Dr. Eben Alexander does care and might try to give us an answer. He was an academic neurosurgeon for 25 years, when in 2008 he was driven into a coma by a rare and mysterious bacterial meningitis.  After having a near death experience (NDE), he came back from the coma on the seventh day. It took him awhile to miraculously restore his health back to a normal state. After following his older son’s advice, he wrote what he remembered happened to him. The result was his first book, “Proof of Heaven”. His latest one on the same subject is “The Map of Heaven: How Science, Religion, and Ordinary People Are Proving the Afterlife”, which he wrote together with Ptolemy Tompkins.

In the Torah’s text, the first line states “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…” (Genesis 1:1). Thus, when our world was created there were not one, but a multitude of heavens. According to the accounts of Dr. Alexander and others, who experienced NDE, it seemed that what we call our soul, left the body and traveled through different heavens towards the light. There, it met the souls of their departed relatives, and guardian angels, who are also mentioned in the Torah, “And God said, ‘Let us make Man in Our image, after Our likeness’” (Genesis 1:26). But none of the people who reported their experience of NDE met the reputable 72 virgins in the heavens, which according to some sources is the reward expected by the Islamic martyrs.

But how about communicating with our departed ones? Is it possible? Author Mitch Albom, whose first book, “Tuesdays With Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lessons” became a best seller, has his own take on this subject in his latest book, “The First Phone Call From Heaven”. His theory is one’s quest of the afterlife accompanies humans from our birth. Some religions promise the paradise as a salvation for those who suffer in their life on earth, or to sinners after their repentance. But what happens after we die? According to Dr. Eben Alexander and others, what we call the heavens or paradise is filled with love. Do we need to wait until we die to experience it? I do not think so. Love is everywhere. The Bible tells us “love your enemies” (Matthew 5:43-45).

Like there are many heavens, there are different manifestations of love. But there is one source in our bodies where Love resides—our hearts.

In the past, when I would get upset about something, my wife Elfa would ask me, “Does your feeling come from your brain or from your heart?” In that moment, I connected with my heart, and the only thing I could feel is Love and all of my other feelings were gone.

P.S.

When we talk or think about heaven, we look up into the sky. It looks differently from below as it looks from the plane or seen by astronauts from space above the Earth. I like to take images of the heavens during my flights. Please enjoy with love.
